The newest version of Subaru’s iconic Outback, the original and I would say industry benchmark Crossover Utility Vehicle, is quite a departure from its predecessors.  The six previous versions of Outback looked like each other, you could mark the evolution of their styling.  And, to most eyes, they were a wagon.

2026 OUTBACK – Welcome to Generation 7 !

The 2026 Outback 7th Generation is radically different.  The exterior of the new Outback is classic ‘boxy’ SUV.  It has appealed to a lot of people who previously thought of the Outback as a wagon.  Even though the 2026 Outback is not longer nor is it wider than the outgoing 2025 model, and is has the exact same wheel base, it is almost one and a half inches taller, giving it noticeably more interior space and a larger cargo area.

The interior cabin is better laid out, featuring a 12.1” media screen that is horizontally oriented.  What most customers have appreciated with the redesign, is the separation of the climate controls from the media centre.  This separation means the return of physical buttons for the climate controls, and these are logically and clearly laid out for the driver and are easy to engage.

The 2026 Outback is available in two engines choices, a 2.5L non-turbo and a 2.4L turbo.  The non-turbo model has more than adequate power and can deliver 38mpg on the highway, while the turbo gets 34mpg, but has no shortage of power.

We’ve had the 2026 Outback in inventory for two months now, and ample opportunity to spend time and kilometers driving them around.  On balance, whatever your opinion of the exterior appearance, the improvements in comfort outweigh these considerations and make it a real winner.  Subaru has done it again!
